  • Before using the AX99, I had three AX88Ds (3U). The AX99 (3U) felt light to me, so I went back to the AX88D and built up a set of five. I mainly play doubles, so it suits me best. The AX99 has more feel, but if you're hitting hard in doubles, I recommend the AX88D for its maneuverability and overall balance.

  • I've played badminton for over 30 years, and up to my current AX99, this was the racket with the stiffest shaft I've used.
    To put it in extreme terms, it's like hitting with a board, and I quite like that. Because it doesn't wobble, it's easy to control and the power transfers properly. The gray color gives it a solid, heavy look, which is cool. YONEX seems to want to push the ASTROX as its main line, but apparently the VOLTRIC series hasn't disappeared because it has devoted fans. It might be a good idea to get your hands on at least one while you still can.

  • In the ASTROX series, I've moved through the 77, 88D, and 99. (I've only test-hit the 66)
    The 99 is said to be a model for singles players, but I think it works in doubles too.
    It's said to be head-heavy, but to me the 99 in 3UG5 feels lighter than the 88D in 4UG5.
    The flex of the shaft and head is noticeable, but thanks to the force of it snapping back, I can send both clears and smashes all the way to the back boundary line just by shifting my weight.
    The rest is preference; in my case the choice is between the 88D and the ZF II, but the ZF II-LD I used to like came out in a new design, so I bought one for the first time in 4 years, and found the shaft soft and hard to play with. (My body had gotten used to the 99)
    Both control and power were better with the 99, and I felt like the 99 was really helping me out.
    In a word, I feel [backed by the latest technology].

  • It was the first racket in the ASTROX series, and the design is innovative too. It comes in two colors, and I had two of each. It's very light and flexible, so it's easy to maneuver, and it's a racket beginners and women can handle.

  • It's a racket with the best maneuverability for front court play. It's 1cm shorter, so it's easy to hit pushes at the net even when it's really tight. On the other hand, smashes from the rear court are slower, since the distance from the point of effort to the point of action is shorter. If you're used to long rackets, it'll be tough until you adjust. I recommend it for women in mixed doubles or doubles players who often play at the front.
